Season 5 Episode 12: Family Home Makeover Helps Tie the Knot
The Mooney family is dear to us. We adore the way they love one another generously and the way they glorify God in all they do. Working on this renovation with Rick (Gabby, Shay and Erica’s dad) was a true joy. He is such a gentle and kind soul and wanted to ensure this house was perfect for his baby girl and her soon-to-be husband.
This home belonged to Gabby and her siblings great-grandma and restoring it was emotional and was all about preserving their family’s heritage. Yes, we transformed every space of this home but we made sure to infuse history into each space. This home is now the perfect place for Gabby and Gray to begin their new life together as a married couple!
Exterior
BEFORE
Before the renovation, this home didn’t feel like a reflection of Gabby’s happy personality and her glam style. So, we completely revamped the exterior (and the interior) to make it more modern, while still keeping the home’s southern farmhouse charm. To do that, we added stone to the front exterior and gave the house large, black-framed windows, a black roof and a black metal dormer. Then, we grounded the look in southern charm with a cozy front porch and large wooden posts. New lighting, a new front door, new landscaping and a nice brick walkway to the front entrance complete this inviting look.

Entry Way
BEFORE
This area used to be the dining room and kitchen. We reworked the space in order to create a spacious and welcoming entry. Now when you walk in through the front door, you enter directly into the heart of the house. Through the hallway where the arched openings are (we didn’t show this on the show) are two guest rooms and a full bathroom which we also renovated.
To add character in here, Dave built two beautiful cabinets within arched alcoves, using walnut from the family’s property. We added one of my absolute favorite chandeliers in here. It’s airy and modern and perfect in this beautiful space.

Kitchen
BEFORE
This part of the house used to be a carport and garage. We raised the ceiling and closed off the walls to turn it into a beautiful kitchen, dining and living room.
This kitchen. Where do I even begin??? The incredible arched window above the sink creates an incredible focal point with a gorgeous view and allows beautiful natural light to stream into the kitchen. Gabby loves stone (who doesn’t?!) so the stone backsplash wall was a perfect addition here. It also serves to bring the natural outdoors inside and creates a nice contrast with the white oak cabinetry and wide panel flooring. The cabinets, the dishwasher and the panel ready refrigerator are all covered in stunning white oak to allow the range to have its own moment. Together with the waterfall island, the gold hardware, gold sconces and my favorite handmade faucet, the kitchen has an elegant feel to it. Just off to the side in the kitchen, we added an old-fashioned wood-burning stone which Gabby really wanted. It helps to define the dining room and create a cozy feel in the space.

Family Room
BEFORE
Before this was the family room, it was the garage. We absorbed that space, vaulted the ceiling, installed large wooden beams and added a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. At first Gabby only wanted the small wood-burning stove in the kitchen instead of a fireplace, but in the end, this large stone fireplace is what we needed to balance the look of the house and tie in the rock on the opposite side. It anchors the family room and truly adds to the overall cozy feel of the home. On both sides of the fireplace, we added large picture windows to really capture the beauty of the surroundings.
To the right of the living room, we added a covered deck for outdoor seating and dining. It gets buggy here in Arkansas, so it’s always nice to have a screened-in patio. We elevated the look of the patio to match the house by adding wood paneling and recessed lighting to the ceiling, as well as black trim to the walls.

Main Bedroom, Bathroom & Closet
BEFORE

Before the remodel, this was the front of the house. The bedroom used to be the kitchen, and the new sitting room and bathroom used to be the old porch. When we vaulted the ceiling, we uncovered original wood paneling and knew we had to leave it exposed for glamorous warmth in the bedroom. Because we installed a new roof, we added insulation above the original wood paneled ceiling and then the new roof above the insulation.
I’m so glad we were able to add insulation to the old porch and turn it into an indoor sitting room. This gave me a chance to add drama to the space with dark trim and bold wallpaper. It gives glamour to the bedroom. Plus, the built-in window seat makes for a cozy reading spot.
For the bathroom, we continued the glam theme with a larger checkerboard pattern for the floor and glossy handmade Zellige tile in the shower. The large individual floor tile magnifies the size of the bathroom, while the geometric shower tile elevates the style. We chose gold handmade Atmosphyre fixtures for the entire bathroom (shower, bath and sinks) – as we did in the kitchen. Above the bathtub, we hung a bubble chandelier as a fun play on bubble baths. The whole bathroom has a Hollywood Regency vibe to it.
We had plenty of space to create a huge closet Gabby – even with enough room for a second washer and dryer. Gabby told us she’s a typical country singer with way too many clothes, shoes, hats and accessories, so we wanted to help her out with that! Now, there’s tons of storage here plus a vanity table and a full-length Hollywood-style mirror for her to get ready.
