Where do I begin with this one? This mid-century tree house is believed to have been originally designed by E. Fay Jones, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Weight, who has his handprint on projects throughout our NW Arkansas region. Restoring an original Jones’ home was an absolute honor and joy.  This home had such care and intention throughout the original design that had been covered up over the years with cheap and non-complimentary elements. We simply needed to bring out the original character and restore the existing original elements – such as the gorgeous raw wood ceiling and mid-century light fixtures.

I love the treehouse feel of this house and the way the green exterior blends in with its surrounding trees. I wanted to make sure to hold onto that, so we kept the green exterior paint color . Then, to make the home more inviting, we relocated the main entrance to the center of the center of the house. It was originally hidden on the side. We created an elevated walkway between the trees, leading up to the front door with a small porch. The new decking and black metal railing is much safer for their daughter now; the old walkway had gaps she could fall through. The stunning handmade midcentury-inspired natural wood front door creates a warm and inviting entryway.

The first thing I noticed when I walked into this house for the first time was the gorgeous natural cedar ceiling. I knew we had to keep this original detail and update the rest of the space in a way that would complement the ceiling. 

After we moved the front door, the new entrance now was straight into the living room rather than on the side of the kitchen. This helped the interior of this home function so much better. We replaced all of the outdated, single-pane windows and, now, guests walk in and look straight out to the woods and lake below. 

The original pine wood floors were uncovered when we removed the carpet and were in decent shape, so we were able to refinish them. In order to create better flow through this area, our plan was to remove as many posts as possible. One was weight-bearing and needed to stay. Dave built a funky one-of-a-kind bookshelf off of the beam which made a nice focal point and divided the open floor plan up a bit for a cozier feel. 

We brought the stairs up to code by replacing the handrail, which also matches the style of the house much better.  For the fireplace, we gave it a complete makeover by resurfacing it with new tile. Now, it’s a statement moment that takes up the entire wall.  I also love the  vintage TV console turned funky bar we were able to create. It’s such a fun, unexpected piece that fits this space perfectly.

I love this kitchen. It’s now modern and absolutely stunning while still being extremely functional for this family of three. 

The striking red range combined with the walnut cabinetry maintain the retro midcentury feel of the house. The gorgeous light fixtures are original to the home; we just moved them over and rehung them above the island. If you look closely, you’ll see we added a secret door from the kitchen to the deck. It looks like one of the cabinets. This allowed us to continue the straight line of cabinets without disruption, and now the kitchen looks bigger.

Since the main level didn’t have a bathroom, we enclosed the old front door (which was on the side of the house) and extended the wall to create a new powder room here. We ran new plumbing for a sink and a toilet. In keeping with the theme of the house, we chose a funky midcentury style wallpaper and a brass faucet. Powder bathrooms are the perfect small space to have some fun with wallpaper and color!

In order to add a dining space, we absorbed part of the back deck and enclosed it to make room for a new dining room. Since this area didn’t have original hardwood, we pulled wood off of the stairs so it would match the rest of the floor. Then, we added new windows along the back to take advantage of the lakeview. I repurposed the original vintage chandelier above the beautiful custom table Dave built with a unique fluted design that fits perfectly in this space.

This room had a lot of wood paneling. It felt like a dark 1970s cave, especially since this bedroom is on the bottom basement level. We gave ourselves a clean slate by covering it up with sheet rock. That immediately allowed the focus to be on the gorgeous wood on the ceiling. For the paint color, I chose a dark tone to compliment the richness of the ceiling. 

To make this more of a main suite, we closed off the old hallway and absorbed a guest room to create a new bathroom. The additional bathroom now has a full shower, vanity and toilet area. I love this fun shower tile – it’s farily inexpensive and the funky pattern elevates the space and makes it feel really unique. We also added a new walk-in closet to complete the main suite.

The Danielsons wanted an area for friends to hang out when they come in from the lake. We built a new deck off the main bedroom suite floor that is ideal for having company over, and it’s easy to maintain. The team put in new deck material that holds up in all seasons and new railing that matches the front of the house. Dave put in an outdoor grilling station surrounded by breeze blocks to go with the midcentury design. And for their little girl who loves rainbows, he built an outdoor swing with little rainbow tassels hanging from it. 

This is the perfect space to unwind and barbecue with friends after a day on the lake!
